Richard Adams was the son of James Jasper Adams and Paralee Phoebe (Phoebe) Bryan. Phoebe was the daughter of Peter Grantham Bryan and Maria Wright. Peter Grantham Bryan was the son of Allen Ludwell Bryan and Phoebe Boggess. As such, Peter Grantham Bryan was the nephew of my fourth great grandfather Thomas C. Bryan Sr. and the first cousin of my third great grandfather Peter H. Bryan. Richard's wife Allie Evans Pitts was the daughter of Albinus B. (Allen or Allie) Pitts and Loutisly/Loutistia D. Brewer. |

This is a puzzling census entry. On its face, it appears to have been Joe David Adams, his wife Mae Meek, and their children Clara and Paul. Nearly everything matches perfectly. The names, ages, and birthplaces for Mae, Clara, and Paul are correct, for example. However, there is no indication that Joe David Adams was ever known as J. Will Adams, and his age in the 1920 census should have been 46. Those are minor discrepancies in the grand scheme of things. But it's also the case that Clara and Paul were listed as stepdaughter and stepson, respectively, rather than daughter and son. Hence, I have a suspicion that between 1910 and 1920, Joe David Adams died and that Mae married Joe's brother James William Adams. That would fully explain this census entry. This whole situation needs further research. Joe David Adams and James William Adams were the sons of James Jasper Adams and Paralee Phoebe (Phoebe) Bryan. Bryan. |
