James Lafayette Catlett was apparently the son of Richard Catlett. James was not enumerated in the 1850 census in Tennessee, but he appeared in 1860. His tombstone says that he was born on 6 Oct 1835. The only possibilities for James' father seem to be the brothers John Catlett, Richard Catlett, Benjamin Catlett, and Samuel Catlett. John was enumerated in the 1850 census, and the entry for the family did not include a son named James. Richard died in 1837, and census entries for his descendants become very scarce thereafter. Benjamin had a son named James P. Catlett who was born in 1820. Samuel had a son named Rev. James E. Catlett who was born on 11 Jan 1834. Despite the close proximity of their birth dates, James Lafayette Catlett and Rev. James E. Catlett were definitely not the same person. So by a process of elimination, James Lafayette Catlett must have been the son of Richard Catlett. James Lafayette Catlett married Nancy Malissa Duggan on 18 Nov 1858 in Sevier County. |

Thomas Roberts age 16 has been a candidate to have been the Thomas S. (Tom) Roberts who married Nancy Elizabeth (Lizzie) Bryan in 1875. Lizzie was the daughter of my third great grandparents Peter H. Bryan and Mary Ann (Polly Ann) Cate. As such, Lizzie was the sister of my second great grandfather William Allen (Will) Bryan. Subsequent research has revealed that the Thomas S. Roberts who married Lizzie Bryan was the son of Phillip Roberts and Mary Odaire. Thomas S. Roberts son of Phillip was about the same age as this Thomas Roberts age 16 who was the son of George Roberts age 46 and Rachel Huff age 44. I'm not really a Roberts researcher, but I wonder if the two Thomas Roberts who were about the same age were first cousins. |

However, Henry and Martha's marriage was before the courthouse fire, so there is no courthouse marriage record. Also, I have not been able to determine the identity of Martha's parents. |

William S. (Will) Catlett was born 3 Jun 1817, the son of my fourth great grandparents Benjamin Catlett and Nancy Lovelady/Loveday. As such, Will was the brother of my third great grandfather James P. Catlett. The fact that James P. Catlett was my third great grandfather is a bit of a guess, but there is evidence to support the guess. See the census entry for James P. Catlett for more information. But even if James P. Catlett was not my third great grandfather, then surely one of his brothers was. So in any case, it is extremely likely that Benjamin Catlett and Nancy Lovelady/Loveday were my fourth great grandparents. Nancy Lovelady/Loveday age 65 was the widow of Benjamin Catlett. I do not know who Ishmael Patterson was. He was a mulatto. Therefore, he very likely was a former slave, and he might have been owned by Catlett family members before the Civil War. |

Sarah F. (Sally) Nichols age 34 was my third great grandmother. Sally had three children with a Mr. Catlett. There was a Nichols/Catlett feud and a Nichols/Catlett lawsuit. One result of the lawsuit was that Sally and her children used the Nichols surname rather than the Catlett surname. Records of the lawsuit were lost in the Sevier County courthouse fire in 1856, and Mr. Catlett's identity is not known for certain. The lawsuit must have been shortly before the 1850 census. I believe that the father of Sally's children was James P. Catlett. See the census entry for James P. Catlett for additional details. Mary M. Nichols age 16 and Nancy Elizabeth Nichols age 14 never married. John H. Nichols age 10 was my second great grandfather. He later married my second great grandmother Martha P. Reneau. My third great grandfather James P. Catlett was the son of Benjamin Catlett and Nancy Loveday. In about 1851, James P. Catlett married Sarah McMahan who was 36 years old in the 1860 census. However, Sarah McMahan was not my third great grandmother, and the story of James P. Catlett is a bit more complicated than that. Sarah F. (Sally) Nichols was my third great grandmother. She had three children with a Catlett man from 1844 through 1849. But there was a Nichols-Catlett feud, there was a Nichols-Catlett lawsuit, Sally and her children kept the Nichols surname, and a courthouse fire destroyed all the records. Circumstantial evidence suggests very strongly that the father of Sally's children was a son of Benjamin Catlett. Of Benjamin's sons, James P. Catlett seems most likely to have been the father of Sally's children. There are two pieces of evidence supporting this conclusion. One piece of evidence is the death certificate of John H. Nichols, which lists his parents as James C. Nichols and Sarah F. Nichols. There was no James C. Nichols, and the reference to James C. Nichols was probably a reference to James Catlett Nichols who was really James Catlett. The other piece of evidence is Sevier County warrant sworn out on 2 Aug 1851 by Sarah Nichols against James P. Catlett. 1851 is shortly after Sally Nichols and her Catlett man were broken up by the Nichols-Catlett feud. That is, Sally's youngest child was born in 1849, and in the 1850 census she and her three children were living with her parents and using the surname Nichols. I do not yet know why the record of the 1851 warrant was not destroyed in the 1856 courthouse fire. |

James Jefferson Brock was the son of George Brock and Sarah. My interest in the family is that James Jefferson Brock married Martha Jane Catlett. There is some question as to Martha's parents. This cluster of Catlett families suggests rather strongly that she was the daughter of Samuel Catlett and Hannah. The naming pattern of the Brock children suggests the same thing. I do not believe I am descended from Samuel Catlett. It seems more likely that I am descended from Samuel's brother Benjamin. So the most likely scenario is that Martha Jane Catlett was the niece of my probable fourth great grandfather Benjamin Catlett. |

Margaret Angeline (Angeline) Bryan age 27 was the daughter of my fourth great grandparents Thomas C. Bryan Sr. and Nancy Cate. As such, Angeline was the sister of my third great grandfather Peter H. Bryan. Angeline married John J. Gaut on age 29 on 15 Mar 1855. John was the son of Joseph Gaut and Delilah Jones, who were living next door. The first child was Jerusa Jane (Jane) Gaut age 4. The census entry for Jane is somewhat incorrect in that it listed her age as 4/12, except that the denominator of the fraction may have been crossed out. In any case, she was born in 1856. The listing for Joseph age 4/12 is almost certainly in error. For one thing, the first line of the census entry for the very next family was for John's father Joseph Gaut age 62, except that his occupation of farmer and his personal and real property of $3250/$3540 were listed next to Joseph age 4/12 rather than next to himself. Also, the family's first son was Marquis Lafayette Gaut, 24 Oct 1857 - 7 Feb 1860, and the family's second son was Robert (Bruce) Gaut, 17 Jun 1861 - 22 Apr 1898. There was a son Joseph J. Gaut, but he was born 24 Feb 1863. So it's really unknown who was intended to be listed as the son age 4/12, and for that matter what age was intended to be listed. My best guess is that the male age 4/12 was really Bruce, and that he was really born in 1860 rather than in 1861. For example, Bruce was listed as 10 years old in the 1870 census rather than 9 years old. |

William Ramey Underwood age 43 and Martha Langston age 40 were my third great grandparents. William Raney Underwood was the son of Enoch Underwood and Nancy Underwood (first cousins who married). Per Burl Underwood, Martha Langston was the daughter of Jesse Langston and Fannie Martin. Recent Langston research suggests Fannie Martin married Zorabable Langston, and that Jesse Langston was the son of Fannie and Zorabable, so there are some questions in this regard. Malissa E. Underwood age 5 was my second great grandmother who later married my second great grandfather William A. Bryan. Malinda was her twin. P.J. age 21 was Enoch Pleasant (Pless) Underwood, who was still living in the household of his parents William Ramey Underwood and Martha Langston even though he was married. I cannot explain the initials "P.J.". Pless's wife was Susan M. Pollard age 16, daughter of James C. Pollard and Cynthia Cate. Cynthia Cate in turn was the granddaughter of John Cate Sr. via her father Rev. Elijah Cate. Pless and Susan were married 7 Feb 1860, so they hadn't been married very long at the time of the census. Their first child Eugene Underwood was born 23 Dec 1860, and thus was not not enumerated in the 1860 census. |

From RJP: Sarah & James from the 1850 Census must have died. I believe this to be Eliza C. wife of William M. although he was mentioned in his father's 1867 estate, they are living close again to Elizabeth Bryant his stepmother. From RGB: I agree with RJP. Caroline was the widow of William M. Bryan who died 17 Apr 1860 according to the Allen S. Bryan Sr. family bible, and according to his tombstone at the Saffell Cemetery. My guess is that William appeared in his father's 1867 settlement simply because his father did not change his will after William died, and therefore the settlement had to mention William to give his share of the estate to his children. William's wife Eliza Aramantha Caroline Huffaker was known as Caroline. James Bolivar Bryan had died in 1853. Sarah had died 12 Apr 1853. Since they died in the same year, one might suspect that James and Sarah died of the same epidemic of the same disease. Mary Adelia Bryan m. Abner Henry Huffaker. I am curious as to how Caroline and Abner might have been related. I have Fanny listed as Laura Minerva in my data base. I have Nancy listed as Nancy Kathleen, and Malinda as Malinda Josephine.
