Rehoboth Church

Rehoboth Church is the oldest church west of the Allegheny Mountains.  I am including this reference because Tobias Peters and Elizabeth Scarborough were married there in 1797, shortly before they moved to Anderson County, Tennessee.  The church records spell his name as Tobyas Petters.

The church was built in Greenbrier County, Virginia.  However, that part of Virginia is now West Virginia, and that part of Greenbrier County is now in Monroe County.

The church is a Methodist church founded by Bishop Francis Asbury.  Tobias was a Methodist preacher, or exhorter.  His son James was a Methodist minister, as were many of the sons of James.  They were members of the Holston Conference of the Methodist Church in East Tennessee.
